Almond House

Almond house has been in Hyderabad for 29 years now, started by Chaitanya Muppala’s father and now being run by Chaitanya himself who is a stickler for hygiene and perfection when it comes to anything that is being served at Almond House

Their flag ship store at KPHB is a testament to the fact that they wanted to perfect their dishes and then expand and it took them close to 10 years for this branch to come up (Planning, Saving, Construction, Designing. Machinery Setup etc. ) and it is amazing to say the least.

Their “Kitchen First” policy is one of the best things that can happen to any Mithai store as the focus is properly aligned to how they are made rather than how it looks or presented in a fancy store or boxes. Add the fact that they are vying for HACCP( Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certification soon which would ensure that every product manufactured has gone through a rigorous quality control check point in a controlled sterilized environment.

Our visit started with a small intro session with Chaitanya who explained the concept behind this new venture and what he has in store for us.

The welcome drinks

Masala Chaas – It was good , but a little extra green chilli and spices would have given it a kick as I like mine a tad spicy

Sweet Lassi – Should have thicker consistency

Maska Chaska Aam – Delicious mango flavored which is seasonal and refreshing, do try it

Pomegranate Jaljeera – Amazing tangy taste

Cold Coffee – Subtle taste of coffee which is not too overpowering on the taste buds, non-coffee folks would enjoy it, coffee addicts might find weak for their palate

Then the Kitchen visit began….

Kitchen head caps and shoe coverings are a mandate as you enter a thorough clean environment,  they have Air conditioned Finishing and packaging rooms, air is filtered , humidity controlled, fresh air is sterilized with UV light , air quality and microbial content is checked on weekly basis. Health checks and screening for infectious diseases for all food handlers are done at regular intervals

This reminded me of Hollywood movies where they show research and production labs with this type of environment

We saw fresh Kaju Katli, Motichur Laddo, Chikki, Biskit, Puri’s of Pani Puri , Badam Ki Jali and I got to taste all of these. One word to describe it “AMAZING”

Came back to the ground floor to snack on some of the chat delicacies as part of their new venture “Gappe Vappe” Chaatwala

and we were served…

PaniPuri Bharaniwala – Puri along with 3 variety of Pani (Pomegranate Chaska, Bondi Khatta, Aam Khatta)  along with Aloo, Chana and Imli & Ginger Khatta – The Pani would have to be a little spicy as Telangana folks are used to spice in all their dishes

Paneer Kathi Kebab with Rumali Roti – The name itself is quite explanatory, the batter coating on the paneer had less amount of salt as per me.

Sev Puri – This was one of the best dishes on the day, just loved the taste. Suggested to try a slightly thicker Puri as the base which can also help in not getting soggy quickly.

Matar Kachori Chat – Flattened kachori with matar and other spicy ingredients on top made this delicious

Pav Bhaaji Fondue – The Pav was fresh and soft but the Bhaaji could have been spicy and tangy. Concept is nice and unique, just a small tweek on spice is required

Watermelon Rosgulla – 7 kgs of Water Melon goes into making just half of kg of this dish, a different take on the regular rosgulla you get to it in the market

Ginger Rosgulla – Was skeptical on trying this thinking that the ginger flavor would be too over powering but it turned out to be quite subtle.

Sondesh – delicious bengali sweet, popular all over India and abroad. It is often made for festive and special occasions, it has paneer in it but they added Mango to it and made something which is already delicious into something exquisite

Mandi@36 Arabian Kitchen

Faham Chicken

When someone asks me to visit an Arabian restaurant , lot of things run in my mind about the food that they might be offering. Authentic or Indianized, Seating, Ambiance Etc.

This new place which is hardly 5 months old checks all the boxes. One of the best Arabian foods that I have had in recent times

Detailed review follows…

Ambiance: Table and Traditional Floor seating setup, Good ambiance and cleanliness, great to visit with family

Service: Staff is well trained to suggest what to order and adept at explaining what kinda dishes they have, which is missing across many other restaurants in the city

Food:

Mandi with Chicken (Faham), Fish, Mutton : All three meats were very juicy, tasty and delicious, rice was flavorful as well

Mandi@36

Mandi

The mutton soup was one of the best being served across other Hyderabad Mandi places, it was a little salty for me but very tasty

Mutton Soup

Mutton Soup

Faham Chicken (Starter) yet to be added to the menu – Recommended by the Owner Syed Waris. This was the surprise element of the evening. The creamy gravy on the chicken was downright addictive and superb.Extremely delicious dish and a must must try.

Desserts: Tried the Baklava and didn’t like it that much, desserts are procured from other vendors, would have to wait for their in house delicacies to start

Karim’s

Karim’s is considered to be one of the legendary places to visit in Delhi, known to serve delicious Mughlai food. Their branches are located across Delhi and other northern parts of India. South had been deprived of their cuisine until now…

2’nd week of October saw their first branch in South India being launched at Podium Mall in Tolichowki, Hyderabad. Our visit to this outlet was on the 23’rd and it was definitely a good experience

Detailed review follows…

We started of our meal with soup, Gosht(Lamb) ka shorba & Murgh(Chi.) ka shorba. Both the broth were the same with addition of Lamb & Chicken in it. Still it was nice and flavorful, the hyderabadi marag is like a semi-clear broth while this is a little thicker in consistency and less on the spice aspect. Overall they have just three options in soup category the other which we didn’t try was the tamatar ka garam ras – Basically your run of the mill tomato soup

Gosht(Lamb) ka shorba

Coming to the starters the list is long and we loved most of the things that we had ordered
especially Mutton Burra – Marinated, skewered, roasted, medium spiced and charred in the tandoor, this lamb on the bone which is one of their signature dishes is definitely delicious and recommended.

Mutton Burra

Tandoori Rann – Leg of lamb marinated overnight and then roasted to perfection in a tandoor. The marination was perfect as each and every bite was quite flavorful and very succulent

Tandoori Rann

Tandoori Murgh – The Hyderabadi version of this dish is quite spicy and their version is slightly less on the spice level but equally flavorful

Tandoori Murgh

Dil pasand sheek kebab – This is the usual sheek kebab that you can get but the only let down was the green mint chutney which accompanied it. Totally watery – huge scope of improvement there

Dil pasand sheek kebab

Murgh Tikka – This was good but medium/less on the spice levels, when compared to the hyderabadi version very mild.

Fish Tikka – The only dish that disappointed, big chunks of boneless fish but the marination was not proper as the flavor was very mild and didn’t seep inside. Smaller pieces or lenghtier time for marination would help

For the main course

Dil Bahar Do Pyaaza (Stew) – A lamb onion curry, traditionally it has green chillies, red chillies(whole and powder), tumeric, ginger & garlic chopped making it more on the spicy side however Karim’s version is a tad medium (Very less for my palate though) and would definitely be liked by the general public

Dil Bahar Do Pyaaza (Stew)

Jahangiri Murgh – Boneless chicken pieces marinated with Yoghurt, tikka masala. It went well with the Khameri naan and butter naan we had ordered. Again medium on the spice level

Jahangiri Murgh

Laham Mandi – I found the rice to be yummy and perfect, the mutton however can be improved a little to be made more softer

Laham Mandi

Mutton Biryani – They have a Hyderabadi chef making this dish here and it is quite good, but the Mirchi ka Salan exceeded my expectations and I can say it is now in the top 5 places where you get the best one

Mutton Biryani

Small portion of Mutton Nihari(Northern Style) & Mutton Khorma were given across and they both were pretty delicious , the mutton pieces were soft but the flavor of the curry/spices hadn’t quite seeped into the meat which could have made the dish more tastier

Mutton Nihari

Desserts:
Limited options for dessert where we were served Badam Kund and Kaddu ka Halwa. Badam Kund was one of the best ones that I had in recent times, khowa and almond ratio was perfect which made the dish even more enjoyable.

Kaddu ka Halwa

Badam Kund

Highlights: Mutton Burra,Mutton Rann, Mandi, Dil Bahar Do Pyaaza and Badam Kund are my recommendations.

Biryani Ghar

When I asked for a feedback about this place from a foodie friend , I got an immediate reply that the biryani is plain and simple with less amount of spices and upon further inquiry found that he likes the biryani at Kritunga and Sri Kanya where it is full of spices & garam masala which is nowhere close to what a hyderabadi dum biryani is supposed to be.

The spice quotient in a biryani is on the rise and commercial establishments are modifying their original recipes to cater to this demand. Double Masala the word is quite prominent and I also use it every time when I order unfortunately

Long story short, if you are going to this place with that mindset (Double masala/Spicy) then don’t go. You will find the “Muslim marriage/functions/home made style” biryani here which is less or moderate on spice but great on flavor

Menu is small but covers all aspects of a complete meal. Place is nicely decorated and has traditional seating on the ground and table dining setup as well. It has less seating capacity and can get full easily but what they serve sure packs a punch.

For starters we ordered Tawa Machi, Bhuna Chicken, Harees ( Is not on the menu yet) and they were good as expected.

Tawa Machi

Bhuna Chicken

Biryani was served in Handi (claypot)and as soon as it was opened the smell was amazing and made us more hungry. The rice, the mutton was cooked to perfection. Surprisingly the mirchi ka salan being served here was amazing and joins my list after Meridian and Spice 6 for being that good.

Desserts: Badam Firni was rich and delicious, sheer khurma was very similar to what we serve at our home so equally delicious. People who want to try this delicacy without waiting for the invite on Eid better head here.

Closed the meal with some suleimani chai .

Spice 6 brand has come a long way in the last 2+ years for serving the best Middle Eastern cuisine. This new venture of theirs is a testament to the fact that Hyderabadi’s have started exploring and liking other cuisines which does not involve Biryani

This review is based on a Food Event hosted by me for my food group on Facebook called Desi Foodies

China Bistro

China Bistro has launched a crackling sizzler fest which would run till 13th of Nov ’16 offering a wide variety of Veg and Non-Veg sizzler options ranging from Rs.325 to Rs.625 exclusive of taxes. Following is the review of these offering when a bunch of us went for Dinner on 26th Oct’16

Ambiance: If you are passing by road no.1 towards Jubliee check post you can easily see two giant terracotta warriors at the entrance. The ground floor area is mostly used for Buffet and the first floor for A la carte options. Lot of feng shui articles, pictures of warriors, a huge sword gives a depiction of the warriors they had in their army

Service: This was my second visit, first being for a food event earlier. The service personal were quick in all aspects, from the time they greet you politely at the entrance to ensuring that you are seated comfortably was looked at accordingly. As we were there for the sizzlers, the management made sure that the waiters knew exactly what they were serving so that the veg and non veg options do not mix. The service was pretty smooth in spite of the restaurant being 90% full

Food: While we waited for our friends to join we were served with Orange Basil Mocktail which was refreshing and much needed for the gastronomical experience we were about to have

mocktail

Orange Basil Mocktail

As we were 9 people in total we decided to try all the 10 dishes on the menu so that we can taste each one

Chicken with 7 spice, Honey & Sesame: Sesame was a little extra than I had hoped for on some of the pieces and the honey flavor turned this dish into a sweet and slightly spicy one. One piece of the 6-7 I had was slightly under cooked but overall I loved the taste of it

chicken-with-7-spice-honey-sesame

Sintu Soy Fish: Huge chunks of fish with a soy sauce topping and amazingly soft. The thin strips of capsicum added a tangy flavor to the dish and must try for fish lovers

Prawn Cheese Gillettes: Prawns made in crunchy patty style with a generous portion of cheese on top of it, along with diced green, yellow and red capsicum adding more flavor to it

Prawn Cheese Gillets

Roast Lamb Teppenyaki: The word teppenyaki means usage of an iron giddle to cook food, we had thin sliced roasted lamb which was so soft that it was melting in the mouth. Boiled and diced vegetables like carrot, capsicum along with spring onions added a nice touch to it

Roast Lamb Teppenyaki

Moya Lobster: This was the show stopper of the night, delicious pieces of lobster well cooked in something they called as Dynamite sauce. It sure did explode well on my taste buds. If you are a sea food lover then this is one of the best dishes to try

Moya Lobster

Chicken Dimsum Platter: They were serving 4 varieties of Chicken Dimsums as per their festive offer, but the management decided to add fish, prawns dimsums to the mix as well.

Chicken Dimsum Platter

I have tried their Veg sizzler options as well

Vegetable Dimsum Platter: It was authentic in every sort of the way, Diced vegetables with minimal sauce and spices, however this was bland for my taste buds (I like them Spicy) so had to add the sauces to change the flavor quite a bit.

Veg Dimsum Platter

Buddha Almond Sizzler: Boiled Vegetables (Cucumber,Broccoli, Red chilli Etc.) with skinless almond. This was the tastiest of the vegetarian dishes I had for the evening

Corn,Water Chest Nut Cheese Cake: It consisted of Baby corn, Corn kernels, Water chest nuts, Capsicum, Cucumber. It was crunchy as expected but I would have loved it to be more spicier

Exotic Vegetable Teppenyaki: This was just a mixture of boiled exotic vegetables like broccoli, capsicum etc. with sauce. Didn’t find it that fancy

A meal is not complete without dessert so ordered a Chocolate Tsunami from their regular menu

A hollow circular chocolate mousse cake with a chocolate circular plate on top is served in a dish and hot chocolate is poured on top of it which essentially breaks the chocolate circular plate and fills the cake inside. A must try for all the chocolate lovers

Hyderabad Social

Hyderabad Social is located in an upmarket area of Banjara Hills on Road no.12

Ambiance: There is inside and outside seating area, inside has wood panel work done all across , has quirky messages written in photo frames hung on a brick wall. A motor bike also added to the aesthetics. Then came the not so great things…Tables unclean, Sofa’s torn , vessel’s being used for buffet servings with rust on them , kitchen utensil Peel (with an extended handle) – A shovel like tool for stirring in big cauldron, (Kabgir) was used to scrap the floor of a sticky substance. No idea if it was to being used again in the kitchen

20161016_121037

Outside section is primarily for Hukkah lovers or for people who love to sit in an open area. Afternoons might be sultry most of the times, evenings pleasant

Service : 16’th Oct was World Food day and I had lot of expectations on the “THE LATE LATEEF BRUNCH!”event that I had attended. Those expectations were cut short by an epic margin as a big restaurant like Hyderabad Social dished out poor quality lack luster stuff which I haven’t seen in any food event across all groups The management took the words late lateef quite literally in everything, event was to start at 12 and one hour into the event the table and everything else was still getting readied.

Food: 50 hungry people most of whom didn’t even had their breakfast were waiting for the starters which came in such small portions that it was only enough was 4-5 people, finally managed to get some in the 3rd and 4th round only to find the Chicken Malai Kebab so salty that I could barely finish one piece, feedback was given salt was lesser in the next round but no significant improvement in taste overall.

It was the turn of Chicken Angara kebab to get into the high salty mode as the new round had excessive salt in it. Couldn’t find the logic behind excessive salt usage in 2 different dishes. Golden fried baby corns were without salt altogether & the Veg spring roll had its wrapper with so many layers and very less amount of vegetables that it was difficult to understand if we are eating the wrapper or the veggies inside.

The Veg Pasta was wrong from the get go, the milk appeared to have been added when the pot was too hot as it had a burnt smell and taste to it.

The mock tail Virgin Mojito was the saving grace in the first round and when I tried it the second time it didn’t have any syrup , third time no lemon flavor at all as it was not mixed properly.

20161016_124537

While the adults were waiting to pounce on the starters as and when they were being brought out of the kitchen, saw bunch of kids who kept on coming to the buffet table 3 times to take non veg starters but couldn’t get through the adults line only to return empty handed. I kind off lost my appetite after that and didn’t dare to try the main course or the desserts

Overall: The place might be doing great business on the account of hookah and young crowd it attracts, but not re-investing in keeping things in order and clean , service issues months after being open is not expected

Vera Pizzeria

Vera Pizzeria opened its outlet amidst much fanfare and was the talk of the town when it came to their pizza offerings and buffet. Went to attend a foodies event and following is the review below

Ambiance: A two floored house converted into a restaurent with transparent glass all around which gives a nice view of outside surroundings, sofa setup and also the regular table setup was present

Food & Service: we started with mocktails first. The orders were mixed up royally and whatever we had ordered was ending up somewhere else and someone else’s orders were being served across to us, this happened inspite of us asking the waiter to write down our name and drink we had ordered. When it was evident that we were not getting what we had ordered I approached the mocktail counter where only one person was busy making mocktails and refused to acknowledge our order. Iced tea and Fresh lime soda never arrived at the table

Grilled fish with lemon and butter were all good.

Pasta: Make your own option was present where we tried to add sea food onto the mix and it didn’t turn out great.

Pizza is definitely their forte, as we had options of choosing our own crust, sauce and meat . I ordered for So cheesy crust with roasted tomato schezwan and spicy tandoori chicken topping and Pan crust with char grilled pineapple salsa with peri peri chicken. Both turned out to be delicious

Charcoal

People and places have a way of surprising you, same is the case with Charcoal. When it first opened and was getting rave reviews all across, me and my friend happened to visit it one evening and order few of their signature dishes including Juicy lucy and were thoroughly disappointed to the point that we were sure that we would never return again.Small shack, no place to sit, not an easy place to find if you do not know the locale.
Come 2016 they shifted to a new place and expanded their menu and few fellow foodies urged me to try them once again , the below review is of my recent visit to their new outlet in Madhapur

Ambiance: As soon as you enter you see a black board on the wall which is their menu for the day. Indoor dining setup has 30-40 capacity, they have also have a small seating option on the outside which is favorable depending on the weather and okay with the traffic noise. A clear glass parition is present for the kitchen area where you can see the chef’s hard at work creating magic on the grills

Service : Depends on order to order. The meat patty that goes into the burger is freshly made so it takes time to whip up an order of your favorite delicacy . 20-30 min on an average. When you are about to place the order approx. time is told by them which is definitely a good practise, helpful when you are strapped for time

Food : We went there at Lunch time and ordered the following

Lamb & Pita: It was tasty but the pita pieces were a little harder than what I would have liked

11

Then came
The Big Daddy: True to its name it was hugeeee and damn tasty – Everything that was in it screamed perfection

22

Followed by:
Deviled Wings: We were warned that they are spicy and were asked if we would like water or a cold drink handy. It was spicy no doubt but manageable enough for me. My friend was a little flustered but enjoyed it as well.

33

Last but not the least
Juicy Lucy: It was juicy and well made with the right kind of sauces. Delicious.

44

All that we ordered were excellent.

“The forgetful experience” changed to “happy enough not to forget”

Smokey House – Beer & Barbeque

Barbeque House has been rebranded as Smokey House with almost the same food offerings as earlier with addition of liquor added into the menu

Ambiance: Place is located on the first floor (Long flight of stairs replaced with a lift), as soon as you enter , I recollected my previous visits here where the entire setup still remained the same. The nice wood panel work on the tables for the barbecue , leather cushion seats, sofa’s and private dining area for small gatherings

Coming to the desserts section: There were many items like Gulab Jamun, double ka meetha, Ice creams on cold stone, pastries, custard but nothing evoked a wow response that garnered multiple servings. This section needs a revamp, having 3-4 varieties of Pastries just for numbers in dessert section is lack lustre. Some unique signature dish would be helpful

Overall: Desserts are the only item they need to work on
